Privatkeller Cabernet-Merlot QW Bad Vöslau 0.75L
From Bad Vöslau, located in southern Lower Austria, comes this Bordeaux-inspired cuvée from the Robert Schlumberger winery. The house is primarily known in the Thermenregion for its sparkling wines — a fixture in Austrian viticulture for decades — but with the Privatkeller, Schlumberger shows that the region can also impress with red wines. The continental climate with hot summers and cool nights ensures ripe fruit while maintaining structure.
In the glass, it presents a deep ruby red with violet reflections. The nose is characterized by black currant and blackberry, joined by a subtle spiciness of green pepper and some bell pepper — both characteristic features of Cabernet Sauvignon from cooler sites. With some air, the wine opens up and also shows dark plum and a hint of licorice. On the palate, the body is medium-weight, the tannins firm but without hardness, and the acidity maintains balance. The finish is dry, straightforward, and accompanied by a fine spiciness.
The Privatkeller Cabernet-Merlot is a reliable red wine for upscale everyday life. It pairs with pasta with ragù, grilled beef steak with herb butter, or a strong mountain cheese like Gruyère. It also cuts a fine figure with lamb chops with rosemary. Drinking temperature: 16–18 °C.
