The Massetino is the second red wine from Ornellaia — concentrated, but more accessible than the big brother, and an independent expression of the Bolgheri coast. The cuvée of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc shows what Tuscany can achieve with these Bordeaux-origin grape varieties when the soil and craftsmanship are right.

Ornellaia is one of the best-known estates in the Maremma and farms its sites on the Tyrrhenian Sea with a standard of precision that can be read in every vintage. The Massetino is made from selected parcels and is aimed at all those who appreciate the Ornellaia style but are looking for a wine that provides pleasure sooner.

In the glass, it shows fresh red fruits — raspberry, pomegranate — underpinned by a spicy, slightly floral note that the Cabernet Franc brings in. On the palate, concentrated, with a juicy structure, soft tannins, and a long, fruit-driven finish. Not an edgy wine, but a round, balanced red with a clear origin.

Best served at 16–18 °C, it pairs well with braised veal, pasta with ragù, or a ripe Pecorino. It also cuts a fine figure as an accompaniment to an uncomplicated evening with good company.
