M1 QW Carnuntum 0.75L
The M1 QW Carnuntum from Gerhard Markowitsch shows what Blaufränkisch from Carnuntum can do: structured, dark fruity, with real bite and a liveliness that elevates this wine far beyond its entry price.
Gerhard Markowitsch is one of the most influential names in Carnuntum—one of Austria's most exciting red wine regions, located east of Vienna between the Danube and the Leitha Mountains. The Pannonian climate brings hot, dry summers and cool nights, which promote both aromatics and acidity. On the region's deep gravel and loess soils, Blaufränkisch develops the characteristic spiciness and structure for which Markowitsch is known.
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red with violet reflections. With a little aeration, the nose opens up to reveal a complex array of fruit: plum and blackberry, along with dark cherry and a hint of raspberry. Subtle notes of clove and black pepper complete the picture. On the palate, it is dry, with firm but not harsh tannins and a fresh, invigorating acidity—a wine with substance without being heavy. The finish is spicy, medium-long, and pleasantly dry.
An uncomplicated everyday companion that still shows character. Pairs well with beef goulash, braised lamb, paprika chicken, or strong hard cheese. It also goes well with charcoal-grilled sausages. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Ready to drink now, but will easily keep for another two to three years.
