Aquavit Line

The maturation method, in which Linie Aquavit crosses the equator twice during a four-month sea voyage, is now legendary. It dates back to 1805, when the Norwegian schooner "Trondhiems Prøve" sailed to the West Indies with a cargo of Aquavit casks. Five of the casks could not be sold and thus returned to Norway after a

second crossing of the equator. Upon tasting the return shipment, a small sensation was revealed: the Aquavit tasted significantly milder, finer, and spicier than before its departure. The change in taste was attributed to the long sea voyage, during which the casks were stored on the deck of the schooner. The fluctuations in temperature and humidity, the salty sea air, the constant rolling of the oceans, and the long storage in wooden casks clearly had an extremely positive influence on the quality of the Aquavit.

Today, more than 1,000 casks of Linie Aquavit are maturing as deck cargo at sea at any given time. Every bottle of Linie Aquavit features details of the 4-month journey around the world as well as the departure and arrival dates on the inside of the front label. Every sip of this Aquavit thus brings back memories of the sea voyage.

With its unique equatorial maturation and its special taste resulting from the maturation and sea voyage, Linie has collected numerous international awards, most recently Gold at the IWSC in London in 2008 and Double Gold at the San Francisco International Spirits Competition in 2009.

Arcus – a story that you could hardly make up. In 1805, the Lysholm family sent a ship to the East Indies – full of aquavit. Business did not go well, and the goods returned. But the sailors tasted it and were amazed: the aquavit had transformed on the long journey – rounder, deeper, finer.

Today, Arcus in Oslo is Scandinavia's leading aquavit producer. The base: pure potato spirit from Norwegian potatoes. Caraway as the heart, maturation in sherry, port, or Madeira casks – and the legendary Linie maturation across the equator. Craftsmanship with attitude.
