Arcus AS

Arcus – a story that seems almost unbelievable. In 1805, the Lysholm family sent a ship to the East Indies – loaded with aquavit. Business was slow, and the cargo was returned. But the sailors tasted it and were amazed: the aquavit had transformed during the long voyage – smoother, deeper, more refined. Today, Arcus, based in Oslo, is Scandinavia's leading aquavit producer. The base: pure potato spirit made from Norwegian potatoes. Caraway at its heart, maturation in sherry, port, or Madeira casks – and the legendary line maturation across the equator. Craftsmanship with conviction.

Arcus AS –
Aquavit from Oslo, on course since 1805

Arcus from Oslo owes its reputation to a mishap: in 1805, the Lysholm family sent a ship carrying aquavit to the East Indies – the deal failed, and the goods were returned. But the voyage had transformed the aquavit: smoother in body, deeper in flavor, and more refined in finish. This accident became a principle.

To this day, Arcus relies on pure potato spirit made from Norwegian potatoes as its base. Caraway remains the aromatic heart, but the aging process determines the character: sherry, port, and Madeira casks give the different lines their depth. The best-known method is the so-called line aging – the casks actually cross the equator on merchant ships twice before the aquavit is bottled. Temperature fluctuations, movement, and salty air do the rest.

The result is not a mass-produced product, but a distillate with character: clear in its origin, complex in its expression. Whether enjoyed neat with gravlax or as an accompaniment to a Nordic feast – Arcus Aquavit is a testament to the Scandinavian distilling tradition.
