Vernatsch is South Tyrol's very own grape variety — light-footed, direct, and with a freshness that other red wines rarely reach. The Kellerei Kaltern, one of the oldest and most renowned cooperatives of Lake Kaltern, has created a cuvée with the kunst.stück that shows exactly that: what Vernatsch can do when you consistently trim it for elegance instead of weight.

In the glass, it glows in a light ruby red. In the nose, it opens with cherries, raspberry, and a hint of dried violets — typical for the grape variety, which is also called Schiava in German. The palate is slim, with soft, barely noticeable tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its light body. The finish is short and clean, with a subtle bitter note that invites you to keep drinking.

Exactly this lightness makes it the ideal choice for situations where a heavy red wine would be too much: with South Tyrolean speck, grilled trout, pasta with tomato sauce, or a simple cheese board. Serve slightly chilled — 14–16 °C brings out its fruit best.
