El Raño Sardines in Olive Oil

El Raño sardines come from the Cantabrian Sea, one of the most fish-rich stretches of coastline in northern Spain. The cold, nutrient-rich waters produce fish with firm flesh and a distinctive flavor – the foundation of any good canned sardines.

The jar contains clear olive oil; the meat is firm and lifts easily from the can without falling apart. The taste is straightforward: salty, full-bodied, with the typical briny, maritime note of Cantabrian sardines – without any sharpness or bitterness in the finish.

Enjoy it on toasted white bread with a little butter, as part of a tapas spread, or drizzled over a simple tomato salad. Wine recommendation: a dry Txakoli or a young Albariño from Galicia – both offer enough acidity to balance the oil's richness.

Viani has been importing Italian and Mediterranean delicacies to Germany since 1973 – founded by Antonio Viani from Pietra Ligure, today managed by his son Remo. Around 3,000 products from about 400 artisanal producers: cold-pressed olive oils, handmade pasta, balsamic vinegars, antipasti, and rarities such as caper leaves from the island of Salina.
