Dr. Hinkel Grauburgunder Qualitätswein

A Pinot Gris with real substance: powerful, mineral, and with significantly more depth than the term "quality wine" would suggest. Dr. Hinkel from Rheinhessen specializes in precise, characterful white wines—and this Pinot Gris demonstrates what the region is capable of when winemakers focus on structure rather than pleasing lightness.

On the nose, the wine opens with ripe stone fruit aromas—pear and yellow apple—accompanied by a hint of caramel and fresh herbs. On the palate, it displays a firm body and a lively, invigorating acidity that keeps the wine taut without being harsh. Particularly striking is a highly concentrated block of minerality with noticeable salinity on the finish—this gives the wine length and lingering character. The subtle extract sweetness integrates harmoniously into the structure without masking the freshness.

Pinot Gris from Rheinhessen often grows on limestone and loess soils, which impart the wine with its typical combination of fruitiness and mineral tension. This wine pairs well with dishes of a similar structure: pan-fried trout with almond butter, a creamy risotto with Parmesan, or mature mountain cheese. It also complements Asian-inspired dishes with ginger, coriander, or a touch of spice. Best served at 10–12 °C —if drunk colder, it loses its aromatic expression.
