Château Léoville Poyferré St. Julien Grand Cru Classe

Château Léoville Poyferré Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé is a powerful yet refined Bordeaux from the heart of Saint-Julien – a 2nd Grand Cru Classé from 1855 that combines typical Médoc elegance with considerable substance. The estate primarily uses Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, resulting in a highly concentrated, mineral-driven red wine.

In the glass, it displays a deep, dark ruby red with violet reflections. The nose is complex: cassis, blackcurrant, a touch of blackberry, along with cedarwood, tobacco, graphitic gravel, and delicate floral-earthy nuances reminiscent of the sunny gravel slopes of Saint-Julien. The oak aging is clearly perceptible, yet remains elegant, acting more like a framed backdrop than a dominant feature.

On the palate, the Léoville Poyferré is dense, structured, and noticeably astringent without being harsh – fine yet present tannins, lively, mineral acidity, and a long, very powerful finish with notes of black berries, tobacco, and subtle spice. At around 13.5–14.5% ABV, it pairs ideally with roast beef or lamb, game dishes, or a fine, aged cheese, and is a Bordeaux that demonstrates how power and elegance can go hand in hand in Saint-Julien.
