The terroir around Pauillac has been shaped by human hands for millennia, particularly along the river. The Pauillac area as we know it today came into being when two former parishes, Saint-Martin de Pauillac and Saint-Lambert de Rignac, whose respective lords were Lafite and Latour, were united. The wines from these two communes have always been among the elite of the Médoc, from the Middle Ages to the present day, whether they were estate wines or simple bourgeois wines. This red wine is a classic and very characteristic Pauillac with aromas of cassis, blackberries, and vanilla. A powerful wine with a beautiful structure and a long finish. The Haut-Batailley is aged for 16-18 months in oak barrels. Wine Spectator: 95 points for the 2020 vintage.

Château Batailley

The name Batailley derives from the "battle" that raged on this land around 1453 during the Hundred Years' War, where the eponymous château and its vineyards are now located. In this battle, the French recaptured the neighboring Château Latour from the English. It was a decisive moment in the final end of 300 years of English rule in Aquitaine. Exactly one hundred years later, in the 16th century, the first vines were planted in this historic soil. The 5-hectare park of Château Batailley was designed in 1850 by Barillet-Deschamps, architects to Napoleon III. In 1855, Batailley wines were granted Grand Cru Classé status under Napoleon's classification system.
