The name Batailley derives from the "battle" that raged on this land around 1453 during the Hundred Years' War, where the eponymous château and its vineyards are now located. In this battle, the French recaptured the neighboring Château Latour from the English. It was a decisive moment in the final end of 300 years of English rule in Aquitaine. Exactly one hundred years later, in the 16th century, the first vines were planted in this historic soil. The 5-hectare park of Château Batailley was designed in 1850 by Barillet-Deschamps, architects to Napoleon III. In 1855, Batailley wines were granted Grand Cru Classé status under Napoleon's classification system.

Château Batailley is located in the heart of Pauillac, on soil that has been making history since the end of the Hundred Years' War. The name commemorates the Battle of 1453, in which the French recaptured the neighboring Château Latour from the English — a turning point that ended 300 years of English rule over Aquitaine. About a hundred years later, in the 16th century, the first vines were planted here.
The château's five-hectare park was designed in 1850 by Barillet-Deschamps, the landscape architect of Napoleon III. Five years later, at the famous Bordeaux Classification of 1855, the wines of Batailley were officially classified as a Grand Cru Classé — an honor that remains to this day and aptly describes the character of these wines: structured, age-worthy, with the typical depth of a classic Pauillac.
