Château de Mercuès Icône AOP Cahors 0.75L
The Icône from Château de Mercuès is a Malbec that shows what distinguishes Cahors from its Argentine counterparts: more structure, more earth, more depth. Not a light everyday wine, but a red wine with clear character.
Château de Mercuès sits enthroned on a limestone cliff above the Lot and is one of the most famous addresses in the appellation. Cahors, the southwestern French place of origin of Malbec, provides the framework for the Icône: limestone soils, a continental climate with hot summers and cool nights — conditions that produce concentrated grapes with a distinct acidity structure.
In the glass, dark cherry, plum, and an earthy undertone reminiscent of graphite and damp limestone appear. The tannins are present but not harsh — they give the wine backbone without sharpness. The finish is long and spicy, with a hint of licorice.
On the table, the Icône pairs well with braised lamb, confit de canard, or a hearty local cassoulet. Serving temperature 16–18 °C, preferably decanted an hour before pouring so that the aromas can fully unfold.
