Château de Fleurie Beaujolais

A Beaujolais that shows what the appellation can do when it is taken seriously: silky mouthfeel, real structure, not a light everyday growth.

Maison Jean Loron is one of the oldest négociant houses in Beaujolais — founded in 1821, today managed in the sixth generation. The Château de Fleurie is located in the cru village of the same name north of Villefranche-sur-Saône, where granite and slate soils give the Gamay Noir a depth that many do not expect from this grape variety.

In the glass, the wine glows in clear ruby red. The nose shows ripe cherry, violets, and a subtle hint of strawberry — typical Gamay profile from the Fleurie sites. On the palate, convincingly balanced: the tannins are fine and silky, the fruit remains present without appearing too intrusive, and the finish lasts longer than with a simple Beaujolais Villages.

Serving temperature: 14–16 °C, slightly cooler than a classic red wine — this brings out the freshness of the fruit better.

Food recommendation: Charcuterie platter with Lyoner sausage, poulet rôti, light mushroom dishes, or a young goat cheese from the Loire.

Very poor price-performance ratio

Qualitatively quite a simple Fleurie, which does not invite you to drink like other wines from there. Price-wise completely overpriced

Maison Jean Loron

Maison Jean Loron is one of the most traditional addresses in Beaujolais – rooted since 1821 in the gentle hilly landscape between Mâcon and Lyon.

What is created here is not off-the-shelf wine: The location in Fleurie, one of the ten Beaujolais Crus, gives the grapes time and depth that you can feel in the glass – silky, fragrant, with an elegance that has rightly made this Cru famous.

Gamay as it should be: lively, fruity, and surprisingly multi-layered. Anyone who thinks they know Beaujolais will perhaps rediscover here what this south of Burgundy is really capable of.
