Chardonnay Leithakalk QW Burgenland 0.75L

Chardonnay from Burgenland has a different character than its Burgundian or New World relatives — and the Leithakalk from the Kollwentz-Römerhof winery shows why that is. The limestone soils on the Leitha Mountains give the variety a mineral tension that counteracts the Pannonian heat: full-bodied, but not heavy, aromatic, but with a clear line.

The Kollwentz family is one of the defining names in Burgenland. Their winery in Großhöflein, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, stands for consistent quality work over decades. The Leithakalk is not an entry-level wine, but an expression of its origin: the eponymous limestone soils of the Leitha Mountains imbue the wine with a freshness and minerality that is not a given in this region.

In the glass, it shows aromas of yellow apple, white peach, and a hint of citrus zest, underpinned by a subtle spice and fine minerality on the finish. The body is round, the acidity integrated, without losing any freshness.

Pairs well with fried zander fillet, chicken broth with garnish, or a mature mountain cheese. Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.
