Siegendorf Monastery Cellar – Austrian red wine artistry. Cultivated by the Lenz Moser winery since 1988. The location: gently sloping south-southwest, 24 hectares, planted according to the Lenz Moser high-trellis system – unique in Austria. Cabernet Sauvignon (11 ha), Cabernet Franc (3 ha), and Merlot (7 ha) were newly planted here until 1990. The vines are now at the perfect age and give the red wines considerable power. With approximately 87 percent red wine grapes, the estate is one of the leading producers of Austrian red wine. Only Pinot Blanc (3 ha) is planted as a white wine. Harvesting is done by hand.

Bordeaux varieties in the Leithaberg
In the Burgenland Leithaberg region lies a winery that focuses more consistently on red wine than almost any other operation in Austria: Klosterkeller Siegendorf, managed by the Lenz Moser winery since 1988. On 24 hectares, slightly sloped to the south-southwest, grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot – all replanted in the early 1990s and now at their prime age.
The special feature is the cultivation method: the vines are trained according to the Lenz Moser high-culture system, a form of training unusual for Austrian conditions that gives the vineyard more light and air. Around 87 percent of the area is planted with red wine vines – supplemented only by three hectares of Pinot Blanc. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, which is not a matter of course given this grape variety structure and orientation.
The wines show what ripe Bordeaux varieties can achieve in the Pannonian climate: structure, dark fruit, and a depth that increases with the years. Anyone looking for Austrian red wine beyond Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt will find a clear signature here.
