Erath Winery is one of the founding figures of modern Oregon viticulture. Dick Erath planted his first vines in the Willamette Valley in 1967 – at a time when hardly anyone was seriously growing Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy. What drove him was the conviction that the cool climate and the unusual soils of this region could produce something unique: not a Burgundy copy, but a Pinot Noir with its own face.
The terroir sets the tone. In the Willamette Valley, volcanic Jory soil and marine sediments alternate – a geological heritage from two completely different eras. The long, cool autumns slow down the ripening of the grapes, which shows in the glass as fine acidity structure and aromatic precision: red berries, a bit of earth, a light floral tone.
The wines from Erath are accessible without being flat. They are suitable for salmon dishes from the Pacific, duck breast, or a ripe goat cheese – and are just as good to drink on their own, if the evening allows.
