For six generations, the Després family has cultivated the same slope in Fleurie – one of the twelve Beaujolais Crus, known for its floral elegance, but capable of far more than its reputation suggests. For over a century, the family has known every stone of their granite terroir, and this is precisely what you taste in the glass: no contrived finesse, but genuine provenance.
The wines of Domaine de la Madone are fruity and vibrant without being flat. The Gamay vines growing on weathered granite give them a mineral tension that many Beaujolais wines lack. The Vieilles Vignes, in particular—made from vines between 70 and 100 years old—demonstrates the depth and structure this cru can develop: denser fruit, finer tannins, and a longer finish.
Anyone who has previously dismissed Beaujolais as a light, everyday wine will find a good reason to reconsider here. The wines of the Desprès region pair well with charcuterie, poultry, or a mature goat cheese from the Loire – and can also be cellared for a few years.
