Bergerac has had its own appellation since 1936. The same grape varieties as in the Bordeaux region are at home here, occasionally supplemented by some autochthonous grape varieties. The similarity to the Bordeaux white wines is almost logical to mention, although many Bergerac wines present themselves as slightly more elegant with finesse and depth than their big brother on the Gironde. However, there are chateaux in Bergerac that can produce such high quality that many Bordeaux wines cannot keep up, especially in terms of price. Bergerac with a Bordeaux soul
Château Les Fontenelles is located in Bergerac, one of the oldest appellations in Southwest France — officially recognized since 1936 and always closely linked to the grape varieties of neighboring Bordeaux. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc grow here on soils not unlike those of the Médoc, yet the wines develop their own character: somewhat smoother, often more accessible, with a finesse that one cannot always expect from the Gironde.
What distinguishes the Château is its price-to-quality ratio. While many Bordeaux châteaux charge many times more for comparable craftsmanship, Les Fontenelles remains true to an approach that introduces wine lovers without a large budget to serious Southwest French wines. The wines are suitable for entrecôte and confit de canard as well as for a ripe goat cheese from the Périgord.
