Spätburgunder Langenberg Retzstadt 1G QW Franconia 0.75L

Spätburgunder from Franconia has a different rhythm than its Burgundian model — calmer, more precise, less focused on opulence. The Langenberg 1G from Rudolf May shows exactly that: an Erstes Gewächs (VDP.ERSTES GEWÄCHS®) that draws its strength from silence.

The Retzstadter Langenberg is a so-called house vineyard of the winery — barren, rich in skeletal soil, built on shell limestone. This soil warms up quickly but yields little: the vines have to dig deep, which is reflected in the wine as concentration and minerality. Rudolf May manages his vineyards biodynamically and is one of the quiet addresses in Franconia that has long received more attention internationally than domestically.

In the glass, there is sour cherry, a hint of dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness reminiscent of fresh shell limestone. The body is medium-weight, the tannins fine and present without being pushy, the finish long and mineral-dry.

Good with game poultry, veal loin with mushrooms, or a strong Pinot-friendly cheese like Époisses. Serving temperature: 16–17 °C.
