Schnait Altenberg Riesling GG

Schnait Altenberg is one of the most famous Riesling sites in the Remstal valley – and Jürgen Ellwanger is one of the wineries that have helped shape this reputation over decades.

The winery in Schnait in the Remstal valley (Baden-Württemberg) cultivates the Altenberg vineyard, a steep slope with Keuper soil and a particularly warm microclimate. The combination of Muschelkalk limestone and Keuper marl gives the Riesling here its characteristic blend of spice and ripe fruit – typical of Württemberg's Grosses Gewächs wines, which stand stylistically independently alongside those of the Mosel and Rheingau.

In the glass, the Altenberg GG displays ripe stone fruit aromas – peach, mirabelle plum – alongside mandarin orange and a hint of dried pineapple. A delicate honey note hints at depth without making the wine heavy. On the palate, it is juicy, with well-integrated acidity and a long, spicy finish. Its body and structure make it approachable now, but its aging potential easily extends to 2032.

Serving suggestion: 11–13 °C. Pairs well with pike-perch fillet with butter sauce, veal medallions with herbs, or aged mountain cheese. Also enjoyable on its own.
