Sakurao Sauternes Cask Japanese Single Malt Whiskey
A Japanese single malt from Hiroshima, which owes its character to an unusual combination: maritime climate meets Sauternes casks from Bordeaux.
Sakurao Brewery and Distillery is located directly on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea — the salty sea air noticeably influences the maturation process. For this bottling, casks were used that previously held the sweet botrytis wines of Sauternes: dense, wine-soaked oak with concentrated fruit sugars in the wood structure.
In the glass, a clear honey note emerges, alongside candied citrus peel and ripe mango. The palate is soft and slightly oily, with a vanilla cream note from the barrel aging. Towards the end, a subtle saltiness emerges, balancing the sweetness and making the finish longer than expected. 50% ABV, brought down to drinking strength without dilution—this gives the texture substance.
Neat in a nosing glass at room temperature — the aroma unfolds slowly and fully without ice. For a lighter taste, add a drop of still water. A harmonious choice as a digestif after a Japanese meal or with mature soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.
