Pinot Noir "Estate Grown" Carneros

A Pinot Noir that shows what happens when Rheingau precision meets the cool, foggy sites of Carneros: red-fruited, aromatically complex, with a finesse that one does not always expect in California.

Walter Schug left the Rheingau in 1960 with a VW Beetle and 13 suitcases – and eventually landed in Carneros, one of the coolest wine-growing regions in Northern California, where Pacific fog and wind allow the vines to ripen slowly. Together with Joseph Phelps, he created Insignia, one of California's most iconic cuvées. Today, his children Claudia, Andrea, and Axel continue to run the winery; cellar master Johannes Scheid brings additional experience from the Mosel – a "German mindset" that can be clearly read in the style of the wines.

In the glass, the Estate Grown Pinot Noir shows aromas of black cherry and cranberry, complemented by rose petals and cherry liqueur. Lavender and a hint of tobacco provide depth, while the spice of the oak gives the wine structure without heaviness. On the palate, medium body, lively acidity – typical for Carneros – and a long, spicy finish.

Best served at 14–16 °C. Pairs with duck breast with cherries, rack of lamb with a herb crust, or a ripe Époisses. Also a good choice as an accompaniment to mushroom risotto.
