Mussbacher Eselshaut Spätburgunder QW Pfalz VDP.Erstes Gewächs 0.75L

This Pinot Noir from Steffen Christmann comes from the VDP.Erste Lage (VDP.Premier Cru) vineyard “Mussbacher Eselshaut” – one of the most precise Pinot Noir producers in the Palatinate. The south-facing slope with its coarse sandstone gravel and loess loam gives the wine its backbone: a mineral depth that transcends mere fruit.

In the glass, the wine displays the classic profile of a mature Palatinate Pinot Noir: dark cherry, sour cherry, a hint of violet, and a subtle earthy spice in the background. The body is medium-full, the tannins silky without being overly soft—a sign of careful grape selection. The finish is long, with a delicate salinity typical of these sandstone vineyards.

The A. Christmann winery practices biodynamic viticulture and is one of the leading wineries in the VDP Pfalz (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates in the Palatinate). For years, the Eselshaut vineyard has been one of the most reliable sites for single-varietal, site-specific Pinot Noir south of Neustadt.

Best served at 16–17 °C . Pairs well with duck breast with red cabbage, wild boar loin, or a mature Tomme de Savoie. If desired, cellar it for another two to four years.
