Muratie Ansela van de Caab Cape Bordeaux

A Cape Bordeaux blend with weight and poise – the Ansela van de Caab from Muratie shows what Stellenbosch can do with red grape varieties: dense fruit, structured tannins and a finish that doesn't let up.

Muratie Wine Estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Cape region – the first vines were planted here as early as the 18th century. The farm is situated on the slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's most prestigious red wine terroirs. Classic Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc characterize the cuvée, which bears the name of Ansela van de Caab – one of the first documented female winemakers in the Cape.

In the glass, the wine opens with aromas of black plum, ripe blackberries, and a distinct hint of black pepper. Vanilla and a light cedar note in the background suggest barrel aging. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with silky tannins and a length that lingers for a while after the last sip. The wine has aging potential – drinking window until at least 2030 ; currently, some aeration is recommended.

Serving temperature: 17–18 °C. Pairs well with leg of lamb with herb crust, beef fillet or mature hard cheese such as Manchego.

Murati Wine Estate

Muratie – one of South Africa's oldest wine estates, a listed heritage gem. An almost mystical place brimming with art treasures, boasting architecture from the founding era, nestled in the foothills of the Simonsberg near Stellenbosch. The soils surrounding the old farmhouse are among the best in the country for classic red wines. The Melck family has been at home here since the 17th century. Legendary among them is Martin Melck, who emigrated from East Prussia and founded the Lutheran Church in Cape Town. Ronnie Melck shaped the estate in the 20th century as a pioneer of South African winemaking. Today, his son, Dr. Rijk, carries on the legacy.
