Masseto Toscana IGT 0.75L

Masseto is no ordinary Merlot — it is the benchmark against which other Merlots from Europe are measured. The Ornellaia winery vinifies it exclusively from grapes from the hill of the same name near Bolgheri, where heavy clay soils force the vines to depth and give the wine its characteristic density.

In the glass, the 2021 shows a deep ruby color with violet reflections. The nose opens with black cherry, plum, and a hint of dried violets, underneath a spicy layer of tobacco and dark cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied without heaviness — the tannins are densely woven but velvety, the acidity gives the whole thing contour. The finish is long, mineral, and lingers with a light graphite note.

Serve it at 17–18 °C, ideally after an hour of decanting. At the table, it goes well with braised beef shoulder, game ragout with polenta, or a mature Pecorino di Pienza. A wine for evenings when the bottle can be the center of attention.
