Freinsheimer Oschelkopf Gewürztraminer Spätlese

Gewürztraminer from the Palatinate has a reputation—heavy, perfumed, sweetish. The Freinsheimer Oschelkopf from Kirchner shows a different side of the grape variety.

The Oschelkopf vineyard is located in Freinsheim, one of the oldest wine-growing villages in the Palatinate. Kirchner cultivates plots here that give the Gewürztraminer the necessary tension: The wine bears the QmP Spätlese designation — the grapes were harvested late, the fruit sweetness is deliberately used, not dominant.

In the glass, an aroma unfolds, revealing rose petals, honeysuckle, and ripe quince. Beneath this lies something unexpected: an earthy note of white mushrooms and celery, a hint of lavender. On the palate, it is juicy and dense, with a delicate creaminess and well-integrated residual sweetness—no cloying heaviness, but rather a vibrant fruit profile. The finish is dominated by herbal spice, slightly bitter, with lingering floral and fruit notes.

Serving suggestion: Slightly chilled at 10–12 °C. Pairs well with Asian dishes featuring lemongrass or ginger, mild blue cheese, or a spicy pumpkin risotto. Enjoy it on its own: perfect for a late summer evening on the terrace.

Particular emphasis is placed on the region's traditional grape varieties, such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, and St. Laurent. These grape varieties are cultivated on a total vineyard area of 17 hectares, with 60% dedicated to white wine grapes and 40% to red wine grapes. The wines of the Kirchner winery reflect the Palatinate terroir and the passionate work of the Kirchner family.
