J.J. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett

A Kabinett from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is not a light entry-level wine — it is the distillate of one of the most famous single vineyards of the Middle Mosel, vinified by one of Germany's most traditional wineries.

Joh. Jos. Prüm has been managing steep slopes above the Mosel bend near Wehlen for generations. The Sonnenuhr — named after a sundial carved into the rock that winemakers used to use to tell the time — lies on blue Devonian slate, which stores heat during the day and releases it at night. It is precisely this thermal characteristic that defines the style: ripe fruit kept in balance by a lively acidity.

In the glass, the Riesling shows aromas of white peach, apricot, and lime zest, underscored by the characteristic slate minerality that is called slate spice on the Mosel. The body is slender, the acidity clear and invigorating — no edges, no excess. The finish is long, slightly spicy, with a hint of honey at the end.

Best served at 8–10 °C. Classic accompaniment: trout meunière, steamed scallops with butter, or a mild Münster cheese. Also a good choice as an aperitif or with light Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass.
