J.J. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most famous Riesling sites on the Mosel – and J.J. Prüm has been its most convincing interpreter for generations. This Auslese shows why selectively harvested late-ripening Rieslings from here cast such long shadows.

The J.J. Prüm winery in Wehlen has been cultivating steep slopes above the Mosel since the 19th century, including the heart of the Sonnenuhr – named after a sundial carved into the rock in 1842. Blue-grey Devonian slate stores heat, releases it slowly at night, and shapes the characteristic minerality of the wines. Auslese wines are only produced here in good years, from hand-picked overripe berries.

The wine glows golden yellow in the glass. The nose opens with pear, quince, and a hint of honey, underscored by a fine slate accent. On the palate, it is full-bodied but by no means heavy: the residual sweetness is kept in balance by a taut, almost salty acidity structure – typical Prüm, typical Sonnenuhr. The finish is long and linear, with a mineral aftertaste.
