JJ Prüm Wehlener Sundial Selection

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most famous Riesling sites of the Mosel – and J.J. Prüm has been its most convincing interpreter for generations. This Auslese shows why selectively harvested late Rieslings from here cast such long shadows.

The J.J. Prüm winery in Wehlen has been cultivating steep slopes above the Mosel since the 19th century, including the core of the Sonnenuhr – named after a sundial carved into the rock in 1842. Blue-gray Devonian slate stores the heat, releases it slowly at night, and shapes the characteristic minerality of the wines. Auslesen only arise here in good years, from hand-picked overripe berries.

In the glass, the wine glows golden yellow. The nose opens with pear, quince, and a hint of honey, underlaid by a fine slate accent. On the palate, it appears full-bodied but by no means heavy: the residual sweetness is kept in balance by a taut, almost salty acidity structure – typical Prüm, typical Sonnenuhr. The finish is long and straightforward, with a mineral aftertaste.

Drinking recommendation: Now with a light chill (8–10 °C) with blue cheese, duck liver, or as an accompaniment to spicy dishes with ginger and citrus.
