Hayman's Sloe Gin
Sloe gin isn't gin in the classic sense, but rather a fruit liqueur based on gin – and Hayman's is one of the most compelling representatives of this British tradition. The London-based Hayman distilling family has stood for handcrafted gin since 1863, and it is precisely this Hayman's London Dry Gin that forms the basis for their sloe gin.
For the maceration process, ripe sloe berries – the tart berries of the blackthorn – are steeped in the gin and extracted over several months. The result is a deep red liqueur with natural sweetness and a distinctly fruity character: blackcurrant, ripe strawberry, and a hint of orange peel take center stage, accompanied by a slightly nutty note (nutmeg) on the finish. The juniper base of the London Dry Gin provides structure, preventing the fruit from becoming overpowering.
Hayman's Sloe Gin works best as a Sloe Gin Fizz : 50 ml, fresh lemon juice, soda – that's it. It also makes a great long drink with tonic and an orange slice. If you prefer it neat, serve it slightly chilled (around 8°C) as a digestif.
