Gaia & Rey Langhe DOP, Chardonnay

Gaia & Rey is the Chardonnay from Gaja, the winery from Barbaresco that made Piedmont famous far beyond Barolo. A dry white wine with structure, density, and plenty of pull on the palate.

The grapes grow in two vineyards of the Langhe: Giacosa, planted in 1979, and Rivette, planted in 1989. One vineyard brings freshness and depth to the wine, the other fragrance and harmony. Only in the interplay of both vineyards does the character of the wine emerge. The name commemorates Angelo Gaja's daughter Gaia and his grandmother Clotilde Rey. The wine matures for 18 months in wooden barrels.

On the nose, floral notes meet mineral tones. On the palate, it appears dense and multi-layered; fine roasted aromas from the wood aging lie over a balanced structure. The finish is long and lingers significantly.

Recommendation: Serve it at 10 to 12 °C in a large white wine glass so that aromas and texture can unfold. It pairs well with sweetbreads, fried turbot, risotto with white truffle, or aged hard cheese.
