Colle Massari Montecucco Rosso Riserva

The Montecucco Rosso Riserva from Colle Massari shows what the Maremma in southern Tuscany can do: Sangiovese with substance, without the heaviness of some Brunello vineyards.

Colle Massari cultivates its vineyards on the hills above Cinigiano, one of the cooler corners of the Maremma. The Riserva selection comes from the best parcels and matures longer in oak barrels than the entry-level wines – hence the denser structure and pronounced aging potential.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color. The nose offers blackberry, sour cherry, and dried maquis herbs – rosemary and wild thyme. With aeration, hints of tobacco and dark chocolate emerge. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with ripe, firm tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its richness. The finish is long and spicy, with a subtle leather note.

Colle Massari

Castello ColleMassari – Tuscan Maremma, reimagined. In 1998, siblings Maria Iris Bertarelli and Claudio Tipa acquired the historic 13th-century castle. Their passion: winemaking in symbiosis with centuries-old tradition and visionary modernity. 1200 hectares of estate in the foothills of Monte Amiata, 120 hectares of vineyards at an altitude of 300 meters, just 30 kilometers from the sea. Organically farmed from the very beginning. In the spectacular gravity-fed cellar, winemaker Luca Marrone crafts wines with character. The heart of it all: over 60-year-old Sangiovese vines from the Poggio Lombrone cru. In 2014, ColleMassari was awarded "Cellar of the Year" by Gambero Rosso. Tuscany you can taste.
