Club Batonnage Batonnage

Markus Altenburger is one of the most exciting addresses in the Burgenland wine country — and his Club Batonnage shows why Blaufränkisch from this corner of Austria is gaining international attention. The wine has a deep ruby garnet color in the glass and combines power with a precision that one learns to appreciate with this grape variety.

On the nose, the wine opens with ripe strawberries, dark cherries, and cassis, underscored by fine spice notes that give the whole thing depth. On the palate, elegance follows instead of pressure: fine, supporting tannins, a mineral line that extends into the long, salty-mineral finish. This aftertaste is the trademark — clear, animating, with real length.

Best served at 16–17 °C with substantial dishes: game ragout, roasted duck with red cabbage, or a hearty beef pot roast. It also cuts a fine figure with mature mountain cheese or a root vegetable tart with thyme.
