Chianti Rufina Basciano Riserva DOCG
The Chianti Rufina Basciano Riserva from Renzo Masi shows what this often underestimated site can do: Sangiovese with depth, structure, and a finish that lingers long.
Rufina is located in the Sieve valley, east of Florence — the smallest of the Chianti sites, with steep slopes and narrow valleys that make work in the vineyard more demanding than elsewhere. Renzo Masi manages the cru site Basciano here, west of Rufina, where the soils and the microclimate offer ideal conditions for powerful Sangiovese. The family winery is now run by son Paolo, who joined the family business after viticulture school and continues to develop his father's signature with his own expertise.
In the glass, the Riserva shows complex aromas of black cherry and ripe forest berries, underpinned by leather, tobacco, and a balsamic hint. On the palate, it is full-bodied with silky tannins and a fine spice that never makes the wine feel heavy despite its density. The finish brings dark chocolate and a mineral line that is typical of the soils of Rufina.
Best served at 16–18 °C — with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised lamb shoulder, or mature Pecorino di Pienza.
