Chardonnay “Estate Grown” Carneros

A Chardonnay that takes full advantage of the strengths of the Carneros region: cooler climate due to Pacific influence, longer ripening period, more freshness than in warmer parts of California.

Behind the Schug label lies a German-Californian story: Walter Schug, raised in the Rheingau region and trained in Geisenheim, came to California in 1960 in his VW Beetle and made wine history there—first with Joseph Phelps and the legendary Insignia, later under his own name. Today, his children Claudia, Andrea, and Axel continue to run the winery in Sonoma County. Since 2019, another Geisenheim graduate, Johannes Scheid, has been at the lectern as Chief Winemaker.

In the glass, this Chardonnay displays ripe peach and orange notes, underpinned by apple and citrus for freshness. Toasted oak adds structure and depth without overpowering the fruit. The finish is complex and lingering. Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.

It pairs well with lobster bisque, roast chicken with herb butter, pasta with creamy mushroom sauce, or a mature Brie. It also makes a fine wine on its own as an evening meal.
