Bissersheim Merlot Kalkmergel dry QW Pfalz 0.75L

Bissersheim Merlot Kalkmergel dry QW Pfalz 0.75L
A Merlot from the Palatinate that shows what calcareous marl soil can do for a Mediterranean grape variety: structured, dark-fruited, with a body that has substance without seeming heavy.
The Wageck Pfaffmann winery in Bissersheim is one of the most reliable producers in the Palatinate region. The grapes for this Merlot grow on low-yield plots of the Goldberg vineyard—the calcareous marl soil gives the wine a mineral backbone that distinguishes it from softer, fruit-forward Merlot styles. The grapes are harvested by hand after a four-week maceration period.
In the glass, dark blackberry, plum, and a hint of tobacco are revealed, supported by a ripe tannin structure and a pleasantly long finish. Not a heavyweight, but a wine with bite and character. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C.
It pairs well with roast beef, leg of lamb with herbs, or a strong hard cheese like Manchego. It's also a reliable choice to accompany pasta with meat sauce.
