About Schilkin

From the St. Petersburg Tsar's court to the manor in Kaulsdorf

The history of Schilkin begins around the turn of the century in St. Petersburg. There, Natalie and Apollon Schilkin operated a spirits factory, and their vodka was delivered to the Tsar's court. After the revolution, the family emigrated to Berlin in 1921. In 1932, they resumed production at the Alt-Kaulsdorf manor.

Son Sergei Schilkin rebuilt the distillery, which had been largely destroyed in the Second World War, after 1945. At the beginning of the 1970s, the company was nationalized and continued as VEB Schilkin, with Sergei initially remaining as plant manager. In 1990, the family received their property back. The management went to son-in-law Peter Mier in 1992. Today, Patrick Mier and Dr. Erlfried Baatz run the company, which is still located on the former manor in Alt-Kaulsdorf today.

Traditional recipes, modern bottling technology

Schilkin relies on mature recipes and bottles them with modern technology. The vodkas are created according to traditional family recipes that go back to the time at the Tsar's court. When the assortment of well over 80 items was streamlined, regionality moved into focus. The Berlin family business produces brand spirits and also exports them, including to the USA and China.

For the peppermint liqueur Berliner Luft, the list of ingredients is short: alcohol, water, sugar, and natural peppermint essences. It is vegan and contains no artificial additives.

Berliner Luft and the assortment behind it

Berliner Luft is the house's best-known brand. The clear peppermint liqueur with 18% vol was created according to tradition in the early 1950s. It went from being a GDR classic to a favorite of the Berlin party scene, and the bottle in the shape of the TV tower has long been a Berlin souvenir. It tastes best ice-cold, neat, or on ice. As Berliner Luft Soda with lemon soda, it becomes a long drink, and in a cocktail, it brings mint freshness into the glass without clouding the drink.

In addition to the liqueur, Schilkin carries classic spirits such as dry gin, brandy, herbal liqueur, caraway, and grain spirit. There are also vodkas based on the old family recipes and some modern trend spirits. If you know Berliner Luft, a look at this assortment is worthwhile.

The history of Schilkin does not begin in Berlin, but in St. Petersburg: Natalie and Apollon Schilkin founded a distillery there around the turn of the century, which found a new home in Berlin in 1921 after the family emigrated. In 1932, the family settled in Berlin-Kaulsdorf, where the company still has its headquarters today. In 1948, Schilkin KG was founded as a family business – and grew in the GDR to become the country's fifth-largest spirits producer, with exports all over the world.

After reprivatization in 1990, Sergei Schilkin continued to lead the company as Schilkin GmbH & Co. KG – in direct family tradition, without detours. The best-known product is Berliner Luft: an ice-cold peppermint liqueur that has been part of the standard repertoire at Berlin parties for decades. Fresh, clear, vegan – neat as a shot or in a cocktail. Now represented in over 50 countries, Schilkin remains loyal to its Kaulsdorf headquarters.
