Toro from Castile, rooted for centuries
Bodega Numanthia was founded in 1998 in Valdefinjas — in the heart of the Toro region in Castile and León. The name says it all: it commemorates the warriors of Numancia, who withstood the Roman army for twenty years starting in 134 BC. This intransigence is reflected in the wines — and in the vineyards that produce them.
The vines here are not young plantings. Pioneer families planted them centuries ago, and they survived what almost wiped out other wine regions in Europe: the phylloxera plague. The extreme dryness and the sandy soils of the Meseta made the pest ineffective — and the vines resilient. What remains are vines with deep root systems, low yields, and a concentration that can hardly be denied in the glass.
Toro has a long history of travel: as early as 1492, the region's wines are said to have been on board the ships of Christopher Columbus — as provisions for the crossing to America. Numanthia continues this legacy without romanticizing it. The wines are dense, structured, and age-worthy — Tempranillo in its Castilian original form.
