The Black Forest Distillery is located in the Black Forest and is the home of a gin that has permanently changed the spirits world: Monkey 47. The name stands for 47 carefully selected botanicals, all of which are rooted in the region – from Black Forest firs to local herbs to citrus peels and exotic spices. The result is a dry gin with unusual depth: fruity, resinous, with a fine sharpness in the finish.
In addition to the classic Monkey 47 Dry Gin, the range includes the Sloe Gin, where blackthorn berries give the distillate a dark fruitiness and velvety texture, as well as the annually limited Distiller's Cuts. The latter experiment with a 48th botanical – sometimes ginger, sometimes elderberry, sometimes something completely unexpected – and are aimed at everyone who understands gin not as a standard product, but as a craft.
Monkey 47 works pure on ice just as well as in a gin and tonic with a neutral tonic water that does not cover up the botanicals. Those who want to experience the complexity of the distillate completely are best off drinking it at room temperature in a wide glass – without much fuss.
