Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling VDP Grosses Gewächs

The Zellerweg at Schwarzen Herrgott is one of the most historically significant vineyards in Germany — and a Riesling that carries this origin in the glass.

The vineyard lies on a steep, narrow fault line precisely on the border between Rheinhessen and the northern Palatinate. Pure limestone bedrock, protected from rain and harsh direct sunlight by the narrow terrain, creates a microclimate distinct from that of the nearby Frauenberg vineyard: less exposure, more precision. As early as 700 AD, the Irish monk Philip of Zell planted his sacramental vineyard here. The weathered wooden cross erected by the monks so they wouldn't have to return to the monastery for every prayer gave the vineyard its name. The Schwarze Herrgott (Black Lord) is thus one of the oldest documented winegrowing locations in the world.

As a VDP Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru), this wine represents dry winemaking at the highest level. The limestone soil gives the Riesling a fine minerality, creamy texture, and a cool, precise acidity. Typical of this vineyard site: aromas of white peach and citrus peel, a hint of chalk and flint, and a long, saline finish.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Drinking window: 2025–2035. Pairs well with pan-fried turbot, scallops with cauliflower, or a mature mountain cheese.
