Syrah Gimblett Gravels Vineyard

Syrah from New Zealand has its own distinct character—less powerful than the Rhône, but with more finesse and a cooler spiciness. This wine from the Gimblett Gravels demonstrates exactly that: dark fruit interwoven with black pepper, anise, and garrigue herbs.

Craggy Range was founded in 1997 by the Peabody family and Master of Wine Steve Smith, who has been in the wine business since 1980. Located in the shadow of Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay, the winery adheres strictly to a single-vineyard philosophy—each wine should express the unique characteristics of its site, nothing more and nothing less. The Gimblett Gravels are one of the region's most renowned sites: deeply drained gravelly soils that retain heat and encourage Syrah to unusual depths.

The wine reveals aromas of blackberry and raspberry, underpinned by cedarwood and a long, spicy finish with a hint of pepper. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, and the acidity gives the wine structure without harshness.

Pairs well with herb-crusted lamb loin, grilled beef fillet, or a strong hard cheese like Manchego. Serving temperature 16–18 °C. Drinking window 2025–2030.
