Promontory Cabernet Sauvignon Harlan

Promontory is Bill Harlan's second major project in the Napa Valley — a winery he developed together with his long-time partner Bob Levy from a wild mountain property in the northwest of the valley. The sites are higher and cooler than the classic benchland soils of Harlan Estate, characterized by volcanic rock and dense root systems that reach deep into the subsoil. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that combines the power of the Napa Valley with an unusual rocky sharpness.

In the glass, the wine shows dark blackberry and cassis, underpinned by cedarwood, dried herbs, and a distinct hint of crushed granite. The tannins are dense but fine-grained — no weight without precision. The finish remains long, with a spicy, slightly floral note that leaves an impression of depth.

Best served at 16–18 °C. The wine handles one to two hours of air in the decanter well. Pairs well with braised lamb shoulder, dry-aged ribeye, or a hearty hard cheese like aged Gouda.
