Paul Clüver »Seven Flags« Pinot Noir 0.75L

The »Seven Flags« Pinot Noir from the Paul Clüver Wine Estate is one of the most convincing Pinot Noirs that South Africa produces — full-bodied, multi-layered, and with a precision that makes one think more of Burgundy than the Cape.

The winery is located in the Elgin Valley, one of the coolest wine-growing regions in South Africa. The altitude and the oceanic influence of the nearby Atlantic ensure long, slow ripening of the grapes — the basic prerequisite for Pinot Noir with depth. Paul Clüver is one of the pioneers of the region and has been cultivating his sites for decades with a focus on varietal expression instead of mass production.

On the nose, black cherry and violets, underneath a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, it shows Burgundian fullness: dense, ripe, velvety tannin, a distinct minerality, and plenty of melt. The finish is long, spicy, and with a fine race that keeps the wine in memory even after the last sip.

Pairs with game dishes, braised mushrooms, or a veal chop. Trout with Beurre rouge is also a classic accompaniment that beautifully brings out the character of the wine. Best served at 16–17 °C.
