Königsbacher IDIG Spätburgunder dry VDP.Grosses Gewächs - QW Pfalz

A Spätburgunder from one of the most famous sites in the Pfalz: The Idig in Königsbach is the heart of the A. Christmann winery and is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The wine is a Großes Gewächs, vinified dry.

The vineyard was once the court chamber estate of the Palatine electors and is mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century. It slopes steeply to the south-southeast at an altitude of 146 to 176 meters. Beneath the terra fusca lies tertiary limestone, and the topsoil contains many limestone rocks and some basalt. A wind blows from the Stabenberg through the Klausental, drying the grapes and keeping them healthy for a long time. The Spätburgunder grows in two parcels in the upper part of the site: vines from 1977 and a section planted in 2008 with French massale selections.

The grapes were selectively harvested by hand into small crates on September 9, 2023. The wine fermented spontaneously, 10% of it as whole bunches, and matured for 17 months in barriques. It was bottled in May 2025. From the limestone soil, you can expect tension and minerality, along with the typical red fruit of the Spätburgunder. Served at 16–18 °C, it pairs well with duck breast, mushroom dishes, or mature mountain cheese.
