Hamilton Russell Vineyards Hamilton Russell Chardonnay
South Africa's most Burgundian address is in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – and Hamilton Russell Vineyards has worked hard for this reputation over decades. The Chardonnay shows why.
Tim Hamilton Russell founded the winery in 1975 as one of the first in the cool Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, about 20 kilometers from the coast. Atlantic winds and clay-rich soils ensure a climate that is more reminiscent of the Côte de Beaune than sunny South Africa. Today, Anthony Hamilton Russell runs the operation – with a consistent focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their own vineyard.
In the glass, the Chardonnay shows ripe pear, white peach skin, and a hint of hazelnut from the barrel aging. The acidity is precise and invigorating, the body full-bodied without heaviness. The finish remains long, with a fine creamy texture and salty minerality.
Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.
Pairs with: Lobster with butter, scallops with pea purée, aged Gruyère, or a simple risotto with Parmesan.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – a cool, coastal valley behind the old fishing village of Hermanus, in the far south of Africa. Few wineries on the continent lie so far south. Here, the Hamilton Russell family has pioneered winemaking, demonstrating that South Africa can produce world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Cooling sea breezes from the Atlantic, nutrient-poor soils, and plenty of patience – that's the recipe. The result? Wines with depth and character that don't deny their origin. One sip, and you know: This comes from here, from nowhere else in the world. The wines taste vibrant and precise – fresh red fruits, a touch of earth, a salty hint of the sea. Not too much, not too little. Simply perfect.
