Frauenberg Riesling VDP Grosses Gewächs

The Frauenberg is one of the great Riesling vineyards of Rheinhessen — and this GG shows why: firm structure, cool minerality, long finish.

The HO Spanier winery in the Wonnegau region has brought this historic steep slope back into the consciousness of the wine world after decades of neglect. The Frauenberg vineyard, north of Hohen-Sülzen, lies at an altitude of up to 280 meters, slopes steeply to the south at gradients of up to 40%, and is nevertheless swept by cool winds. The soil is calcareous gravel over a massive limestone base – barren, mineral-rich, and deep enough for roots to penetrate. Documented as early as 1290 as "an frauwenhalten," the site originally belonged to a nunnery.

In the glass: a bright golden color, a restrained nose with citrus peel, white peach, and a distinct limestone note. On the palate, a dense, cool-tasting acidity structure that ties the wine together without becoming too angular. The finish is long, saline, and mineral—typical for Riesling from deep limestone soils.

Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs well with turbot with beurre blanc, pan-fried pike-perch, or mature Comté cheese. Drinking window: now until 2033.
