Chardonnay Thierthal Old Vines Retzbach QW Franconia

A dry Chardonnay with density and quiet power: The Thierthal Alte Reben from Rudolf May in Retzbach, Franconia, shows how much structure a white wine from old vines can bring.

The grapes of the 2024 vintage were selectively harvested at the beginning of September and gently pressed as whole bunches in a traditional wooden press. The must then matured for 18 months in a French tonneau barrel with a capacity of 500 liters. The long barrel aging gives the wine fine wood spice and a balanced equilibrium.

On the nose, ripe yellow fruits, citrus zest, and subtle roasted aromas appear. On the palate, the wine is dense, precise, and elegant, carried by structure and a long finish.

Recommendation: Serve it at 10–12 °C, not too cold, so that the fruit and wood spice can unfold. It pairs well with roasted sweetbreads, chicken in cream sauce, mushroom risotto, or mature mountain cheese and is a good companion for a quiet dinner for two.
