About Proximo Spirits

From the Cuervo family to an international spirits house

Proximo Spirits was founded in 2007 by the Mexican Beckmann family, who are also behind Jose Cuervo. The roots of this story go back long before the company was founded. In 1758, José Antonio de Cuervo y Valdés received land in Jalisco to plant agaves. In 1795, a royal decree followed for "Vino de Mezcal," the precursor to tequila. In 1812, the La Rojeña distillery was established, which is still in operation today.

Proximo belongs to the publicly traded Becle group and is based in Jersey City, New Jersey. In its first ten years, Three Olives Vodka, Hangar 1, Stranahan's, Boodles Gin, and Pendleton Whisky were added to the portfolio. In 2013, the company took over the US distribution of Jose Cuervo from Diageo. The German company, PROXIMO Deutschland GmbH, is based in Bremen.

Brands with origin instead of mass-produced goods

Proximo sees itself as a producer, importer, and marketer all in one. In its own words, the company wants to remain true to the craftsmanship of its founders while adapting to changing preferences. Its brands each stand for a specific place and a unique history. This includes the agave fields and stills of Cuervo in Jalisco and the Old Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland, which is considered the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world.

In the German market, the Bremen branch focuses on premium spirits that are connected to people and their stories. TINCUP American Whiskey and Kraken Rum, among others, were created in-house.

Tequila, Irish Whiskey, and a rum with a sea monster

The range extends from Jose Cuervo and 1800 Tequila to Bushmills Irish Whiskey, as well as gin, vodka, and American whiskeys. According to the company, it includes more than 30 brands in total. In Germany, Jose Cuervo, Bushmills, and The Kraken Black Spiced are the main focus.

The Kraken Black Spiced is the rum from this house that you will encounter here. The brand was founded in March 2009 and launched in 2010. The rum comes from the Caribbean and is blended with natural flavors. It has a dark, spicy, and robust profile. You can mix it as a long drink with cola or ginger. Since 2023, there has also been a lighter version of the brand called Kraken Gold Spiced.

  • Super Tuscans. On the Tuscany page, "Our picks" also takes you to the red cult wines that deliberately broke with the old appellation rules: Tignanello, Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Le Volte, Guado al Tasso and many more, from the first step up to large formats.
