The Limestone Coast wine region is one of the 15 most popular growing regions in South Australia. The largest share of the total wine production in the Limestone Coast goes towards the production of quality wines. The wine region is divided into several areas: Mount Benson, Coonawarra, Mount Gambier, Robe, Padthaway, and Wrattonbully. Although Coonawarra was discovered very late, it is now considered the most famous wine-growing region in Australia. The soil composition of limestone is described as extraordinary and unique, which is likely why the number of quality wines is so high. Various layers lie on top of the limestone soil, such as the famous “terra rossa” in the Coonawarra wine-growing region. Due to the nutrient-rich soil, red grape varieties are gaining great importance. The grapes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot dominate the cultivation of red grape varieties on the Limestone Coast. For white grape varieties, the grapes Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc are essential for the production of high-class wines.
