Macán stands for Rioja in the best sense: Tempranillo, one of Spain's most important red wine grapes, in the region that has shaped its style. You can find two wines from the estate in our range.

Tempranillo brings dark cherry, ripe plum and fine spice to the glass, plus a structure that provides support without feeling heavy. It is precisely this blend that makes Rioja so versatile at the table: it pairs with grilled lamb, chorizo or a piece of aged Manchego, but also with simple tomato bread.

If you want to get to know Spain through its heart, Macán is a good entry point. Serve the wines at 16–18 °C, then the fruit shows itself most clearly.

About Macán

Macán –
Rioja wines from Samaniego, shaped by Vega Sicilia and Rothschild

Macán was created in 2004 as a joint project between Vega Sicilia and the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild. The vineyards are located in the Rioja Alta, around San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos and Elvillar, all within ten kilometers. Older plots on limestone and yellow clay provide the grapes for the Macán, lower-lying vineyards for the Macán Clásico.

Both wines consist of 100% Tempranillo and are aged for 16 and 12 months respectively in barrels, designed according to the Bordeaux model. American oak is avoided after trials. The style therefore lies between traditional Rioja and an ultra-modern approach. The first released vintage was 2009, the first bottles came onto the market in 2013.

Since 2017, the winery has been located in Samaniego in Álava. This is where the wines you find at Vinoscout are created.
