Clos Fourtet is one of the most famous wineries of Saint-Émilion – located directly at the historic city walls, with limestone terroir that forces the roots of the Merlot vines deep into the subsoil. Since its classification as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, the Château has been among the top of the appellation ranking. The wines are traditionally aged in barriques and show a typical Saint-Émilion signature: ripe dark fruit, velvety tannins, long finish.

Clos Fourtet: Limestone terroir at the city walls of Saint-Émilion

Clos Fourtet is located in Saint-Émilion, right by the historic city walls. The site was originally a medieval fortification. Viticulture began here in the mid-18th century under Léon Rulleau, and in 1868 the estate received its current name.

Under the vines lies limestone, which forces the roots of the Merlot vines deep into the subsoil. Since its classification as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, the Château has belonged to the top of the appellation. The owners also shape the history: in 1919, Fernand Ginestet bought the estate, from 1949 to 2001 it belonged to the Lurton family, after which Philippe Cuvelier took over.

The wines are traditionally aged in barriques and show the typical signature of Saint-Émilion: ripe dark fruit, velvety tannins and a long finish.
